The Zinn Education Project held the first national Teach Truth Day of Action back in 2021 in an effort to unite students, educators, and communities against a sweeping surge of classroom censorship, book bans, and attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in K-12 public schools and college campuses. Zinn called on local groups and communities to hold large and small events protecting the importance of honest education and why educators must TEACH TRUTH. The next year, Zinn transformed the Day of Action into an annual rallying cry for honest education by coordinating local rallies, marches, press conferences, book fairs, info tables, and more across the nation.
YOUR VOICE MATTERS: Since the first Teach Truth event, extremist attacks on honest education and public schools have escalated to crisis levels. At least 44 states have introduced legislation or taken action to restrict teaching about systemic racism, sexism, transphobia, and other forms of oppression and resistance throughout U.S. history. Books by Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, and LGBTQ+ writers are being banned in record numbers by the same forces passing laws to censor education and suppress voting rights. These laws and policies endanger the well-being of students, staff, and communities AND threaten our democracy. We must show up, speak out, and TAKE ACTION against these attacks!
