STATE SUPERINTENDENT
Serves as the chief administrative officer of the Department of Education, providing technical and professional assistance and advice to all school districts about education, finance, buildings and equipment, administration, organization of school districts, curriculum and instruction, transportation of pupils, personnel problems, and the interpretation of school laws and state regulations.
Responsible for:
Serves as secretary and administrative officer of the State Board of Education, executing State Board policies, orders, directives, and administrative functions.
Serves on the Ohio History Connection Board of Trustees.
Works jointly with the chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents to establish metrics and higher ed courses that prepare educators and other school personnel.
Cannot hold any other office or position of employment, or be an officer or employee of any public or private school, or a public or private college, university, or other institution of higher education.
Responsible for:
- Administering the school funding system
- Collecting school fiscal and performance data
- Developing academic standards and model curricula
- Administering Ohio’s state achievement tests
- Issuing district and school report cards
- Administering Ohio’s voucher programs
- Monitoring educational service centers, other regional providers, early learning and childcare programs and private schools
- Providing technical and professional assistance and advice to all school districts in reference to all aspects of education
- Providing professional development
- Licensing teachers, administrators, treasurers, superintendents and other education personnel
